Jay and I have been emailing back and forth for the last two days discussing equally how cool it is that the ball is finally rolling on the Songwriter Sunday idea, and also how to make the best of this "meeting of the minds".
Everyone involved, in addition to their obvious musical talent, has a wealth of knowledge that can be useful to themselves as well as other members of our "community". Our real goal now should be to combine these valuable resources with the enthusiasm that we all seem following this 2nd meeting.
Jason has a fire under his ass about his film project and I am very into the idea of a local compilation CD. Rather than put either on the back burner we discussed the feasibility of having individual projects going on simultaneously.
Since the film thing is Jay's deal until he is ready to have us supply music, or he needs someone else's expertise on some aspect of it, then it's logical to have him head it up.
I would be more than happy to focus my energy on getting the compilation rolling, though if someone else felt they were better suited to take that on I would be quite comfortable supporting their leadership in any way I can.
My initial thought on the comp project:
* Any song included would have be available on another release (reason for the comp. disk is promote available solo projects).
* Anyone contributing would retain ALL rights to their material, only agreeing to make it available for this specific project.
* To ensure it was a kick ass CD choose your hit "single", providing your best tune will only make you shine and increase sales of your personal disc.
* Have anyone included on the disk share equally the cost of pressing and equally distribute the disks among them. (keeping 100 off the top to supply to media outlets).
* If the disks cost $1 to make, set a cap $2-$3 each for resale to ensure that we get them out there. If you paid to get it pressed, you should keep the profit of your personal sales! At that price each of us could recoup our initial investment pretty easily.
For this to work we would all really have to get behind sales, but at such a low cost it shouldn't take more than just putting them out there at a gig. It's really not much different than putting a song sample on CD Baby, if someone likes one of your songs, they'll want to hear more!
If we collected emails as we sold we would have a database to contact for a live show that could follow...
These are just some ideas to get the ball rolling, please use this forum to agree, complain, volunteer, whatever!
